During the pandemic, where everyone switched to online learning, children in rural areas found it difficult to attend their online classes due to a lack of signal. One student in Masbate province was reported to have climbed a mountain in search of a signal just to submit her school requirements— the climb took about 30 minutes to 1 hour. On an interview with GMA News Online, the student expressed her reason why she did such effort: “Umakyat [ako] ng bundok for finals kahit gabing gabi na just to pass kasi ayokong ma IP or worse bumagsak”

“I climbed the mountain for our finals even though it’s so late, just so I can pass my requirements because I don’t want to fail”

Not everyone has access to online learning which requires an internet connection and a fast signal especially those in the far provinces and rural areas— with situations like sudden adversities and permanent lack of signal, it is important to have something that is sustainable in the long run and is appropriate and usable regardless of what the situation is.
